CANBERRA,AUSTRALIA (TNC) | Australian PM Kevin Rudd (ALP/Labor) has resigned due to perceived lowered support as Deputy PM Julia Gillard (ALP/Labor) gained enough support from MPs in the leadership election. Gillard was running unopposed in the election and will be the country’s 1st female Prime Minister.
A federal election is expected by the end of this year. The incumbent Labor government is facing popularity issues, possibly leading to PM Rudd’s resignation. However, he polled slightly well ahead of Liberal leader Tony Abbott (Lib) in the preferred PM polling. The latest polls for the Labor government have them with 52% support to 48% for the Liberals/Nationals Coalition.
